Chapter One

A 2,400-year journey of Telugu

The Roots

The Dravidian family

Telugu belongs to the South-Central branch of the Dravidian language family.

Into the Earth

The first Telugu traces

c. 400–200 BCE

Symbolic reconstruction. The relic casket and floating glyphs stand for the Bhattiprolu finds; no specific inscription text is reproduced or invented here. Dating is approximate and debated.

Carved in Stone

A language carved in stone

c. 575–600 CE

Kalamalla is widely considered one of the earliest inscriptions written entirely in Telugu.

The letter carved on screen is our own symbol “అ”, not a reproduction of the Kalamalla text.

The Literary Voice

The language finds its literary voice

c. 1022–1063 CE

The Golden Age

Poetry shines in Vijayanagara

The line “దేశ భాషలందు తెలుగు లెస్స” is traditionally attributed to Sri Krishnadevaraya; its authorship is not documented with certainty.

The People’s Language

From grandhika to the language people speak

1900s–1930s

Telugu Today

A living language, everywhere

2008 → Classical Language of India
